Floating City-Etching

Project Type

Triptych of copperplate prints

Date

06/2022

This artwork draws inspiration from Liang Xiaosheng's novel "Floating City," set in a city floating on the sea after the continent's rupture. Faced with the imagined apocalypse, how do people react? I am deeply influenced by surrealism in Dutch art, especially the works of Bosch and Bruegel, two outstanding masters. By studying their expression of surrealism in paintings and combining it with Liang Xiaosheng's portrayal of human nature in "Floating City," I created this piece.Organizing human nature under apocalyptic circumstances into the Seven Deadly Sins, whether in the Netherlands or the modern era, the ugliness of human nature exhibits similarities. Depicting the darkness of human nature in a contemporary setting may resonate more profoundly with modern audiences. This marks my first attempt at such a monumental composition, and through organizing the composition, I have enhanced my expressive capabilities. The artwork adopts the traditional triptych form, utilizing copperplate engraving as a medium, incorporating elements from traditional Chinese painting, and employing line etching techniques. The aim is to achieve a direct and vivid visual impact through concise line-based aesthetics.
