The Moon's Birthday-Etching 《

Project Type

Copperplate prints

Date

04/2020

The Moon’s Birthday is a children’s story centered on imagination, longing, and the quiet magic of wishes. Created through the medium of copperplate etching, the project weaves together a narrative where mythology and childhood wonder meet.

The story begins with a child who dreams of celebrating the Moon’s birthday. Although he cannot reach the sky, he tries countless ways to express his sincerity, hoping the Moon will hear him. His determination eventually moves the Moon Goddess, who sends a warm, glowing star to guide him to the Moon and fulfill his wish.

In this project, I re-imagine traditional Chinese moon symbolism—such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, mooncakes, and the legend of Chang’e—as elements of a contemporary, poetic, and childlike fantasy. Through delicate etched lines, I aim to evoke a sense of timelessness: something ancient yet gentle, mythic yet intimate.

The Moon’s Birthday is more than an early picture-book concept; it is a journey about reaching the impossible through imagination. It records my exploration of how printmaking can reshape cultural symbols and how a child’s pure desire can transform the world into a place filled with quiet miracles.
